In recent months when I think of the character of God I have become more and more aware of the need to take into account his 'unknowableness'. If he really is 'God' then we cannot possibly comprehend all that he is and does, we have to recognise and make peace with the fact that God has his own logic which doesn't always coincide with ours.
However this way of thinking about God can make him seem distant or abstract, neither of which are the full story. Last night God spoke to me that he is MORE THAN ENOUGH. On one level this was an encouragement that God is able to meet every need but it was so much more than this; 'more than enough' is a lens through which to understand God which does essentially the same job as 'unknowable' but which better describes the incarnate nature of God, his entanglement and concern with humanity.
For many of us our journey of faith takes us only as far as to be able to say with a measure of confidence 'God is enough' for my need, for my salvation, and this is awesome! But the reality of God is that he must necessarily be more than enough, more than his relation to humanity, more than our human ideas of him and more than 'we can ever ask or imagine'.
In thinking about how God relates to our human social structures and cultures, his unknowableness calls into question his investment in human society, in making claims about God's perspective of social issues its right that we should be cautious. However, that God is more than enough demonstrates his abundance, grace and participatory nature towards humanity meaning that not only should we attempt discover God's perspective on social issues but that that perspective will always be characterised by incarnation and grace and more than enough of them!
